Year in Review
My working title for this post was “awesome shit that happened this year.” At the top of 2010, I was all kinds of angst-y - lots of figuring out who I am and going through stuff (emphasis added to indicate emo music playing pensively in background). That’s why I’m so glad that, heading out of the year, I’m brimming with optimism and an overwhelming gratitude for all I’ve learned about myself...

On Elephants and Brooklyn
Just a quick story about why I don’t believe in coincidences. Last week, I told you about my far-more-soul-wrenching-than-it-needed-to-be decision to get rid of my beloved elephant painting. I’d been teetering back and forth on the issue for several weeks, but that night, I finally felt ready to commit to my kitchen wall’s spring cleaning. I posted the piece from the office at the end of a...

A Suitor for Megan
Slowly so they think I don’t notice, all of my family members are migrating back to Wisconsin. Over the holidays, they’ve been doing their damndest to get me to join them. It all started when my brother moved back home last year to climb the ladder of local politics. This coming summer, my sister and brother-in-law plan to pack up their DC lives, trading their townhouse for a back yard and...
I think children should be scared more often.

My sister broke her “no television for Maya” rule to let her watch this with me.
She loved it, natch.

Dreams Do Come True of the Day: Well, sorta: Cookie Monster’s weeks-long dream to host Saturday Night Live was partially realized when he got to share the monologue spotlight with Jeff Bridges on last night’s SNL.

I totally don't get why some people like getting...
Because my niece did it to me twice tonight, and it was really gross. Not like, yelling at a seven-month-old, all “C’mon! Honestly! Geez!!” awful, but really rather unpleasant.
To be fair, I pretty much brought it on myself. Her parents are out on the town for the evening, so they (foolishly) left me home to babysit. When I went to give her her bath before bed, I got the order...
“I was nervous, but excited, so I started singing a song called “Nervous, but Excited.”
I’ve posted this before, but I was telling my brother how I’m nervous but excited to babysit our niece tomorrow, and it made me think of this sketch from when Zac Efron hosted SNL.
IT IS STILL FUNNY.

The Elephant in the Room
In my apartment, a large painting dominates my tiny kitchen. Four feet tall and two and a half wide, the white canvas is filled with the image of a large elephant reared back on its hind legs. Instead of a head, an army tank sits between its shoulders. A large “05” is stamped across the mammal’s stomach, and Japanese lettering reading I-don’t-know-what scrolls down the bottom left quadrant...
Yeah, I worked there. It was awesome.

My Weekend Plans
Nick: what are you guys gonna do?
Me: WELL! We're going to take Maya to meet Santa on Saturday, and then we're going to Rockefeller center and get pictures of her in front of the tree! And on Saturday night, Alana and Bryan are having a date night so i get to babysit! I'm going to pierce her ears. Dont tell my sister. Ha! Just kidding...maybe
This morning on the train
I definitely sniffed a girl’s hair, and then felt really pervy about it.
In my defense, it smelled amazing! Like Winterfresh gum, tobacco and fresh coffee grounds. Someone should bottle that, I’m telling you…
Time to go home
I just attempted to turn the volume down on three different devices (phone, computer A, computer B) before making it to the correct contraption, my ipod.
Goodnight folks.

Style Girlfriend: Holiday Gift Guide for Him →
This week’s column is up! Find the perfect gift for that special man in your life. Or, y’know, your brother. Whatevs, I’m not here to pass judgment on your dating life (or lack thereof)
Wait, what are these Golden Globe categories?
But Lauren, don’t judge til you’ve seen it! Which I, embarrassingly enough to admit, have. And it was awesome. In the way that Crossroads is awesome. Amazingly terribly awesome.

My outrage is directed to the fact that Burlesque was nominated for anything.

Because according to Vulture.com/The Golden Globes, The Tourist was a COMEDY? Wait, what?

Fashion Victim
This morning I had my huge hood pulled over my head, because it was freeeeezing outside. Staring at the ground two feet ahead of me, the fur on my hood serving as blinders to anything outside that patch of vision, I saw a pair of feet in front of me. Cute wedges, I thought, eyeing the black laceups with a thick sloping heel. Although I’m not sure about those tights.
I pulled back my hood to...
